Its fibres can thicken and cast small shadows on the retina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How they manifest themselves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They appear as dark spots, strands or cobwebs that move when you look at them and are more visible against light backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why they arise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They are often linked to natural ageing, but can be associated with myopia, diabetes or eye surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of the vitreous body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The transparency of the vitreous allows light to reach the retina unobstructed.
