What is meant by neuropathies?

Neuropticopathies include disorders affecting the optic nerve and visual pathways, which are responsible for transmitting signals from the retina to the brain. Alterations in these structures can compromise the quality of vision.

How do neuropticopathies manifest themselves?

Symptoms may include visual loss, blurred vision, visual field defects, alterations in colour perception and sensitivity to light. In some forms, pain may be present, especially during eye movements.

Why do they occur?

The causes can be inflammatory, vascular, hereditary, toxic, or compressive. Any condition that interferes with the conduction of the optic nerve can cause neuropathy.

The role of visual transmission

The optic nerve is essential for conscious vision: it carries electrical impulses generated by the retina to the areas of the brain responsible for interpreting them.

When to see a specialist

A specialist evaluation is necessary if the symptoms appear suddenly or if vision progressively worsens.
